  1. This collection is part of the collection of the Burt Munro memorabilia on display at E Hayes & Sons Hardware store In Invercargill New Zealand. (http://www.ehayes.co.nz/Hayes-Motorworks-Collection/Hayes-motorworks-collection-__I.214)

    The E Hayes Motorworks Collection

The rich history of E Hayes starts in the earliest development of Southland itself.

It was back in 1895 when the founding father, Ernest Hayes, started the Hayes Engineering Works in the small Central Otago township of Oturehua.

A millwright and engineer by trade he turned his hand to inventing agricultural equipment that would eventually be used by farmers throughout New Zealand.

When one of five sons, Irving Hayes, opened the first E Hayes and Sons store in Leven Street, Invercargill in 1932, he continued a family legacy, not only of hard-work and tenacity but also innovation, ingenuity and enthusiasm for all things mechanical.

His passion was continued first by his son Norman Hayes and today by his grandson Neville who, as the current Managing Director, is guardian of an ecclectic range of classic and vintage motorcycles, automobiles, engines, equipment and memorabilia which today makes up the E Hayes Motorworks Collection.

From working examples of early vintage machinery, pumps, engines and lathes to the original shop delivery van, and a range of classic automobiles and motorcycles - from turn of the century models to racing bikes of the modern era - you'll find it all here, displayed free-to-view throughout the Dee Street store in a collection like no other.

Each 'exhibit' demonstrates a spirit of ingenuity, innovation and determination to go beyond the expected boundaries of convention and performance.

However, perhaps no single piece demonstrates this more clearly than the centerpiece of the collection - Burt Munro's legendary record breaking "World's Fastest Indian". Read More +

Purchased by Norman and Neville Hayes in 1977 along with Burts other machine, a 1936 MSS Velocette, the original Munro Special Indian Scout as the story of Burt Munro himself typifies the Southland 'spirit to succeed' and continues to draw crowds of fascinated admirers from all over the world.

We welcome you to view any display in the collection during normal shop trading hours. Our friendly staff are always happy to answer any questions you have.

    2. You need a couple of photos of the "Offerings" shelf parts in your gallery on your website. Nothing about it on your website yet.
